Faces to the words

Sitting in the one roomed care point in the middle of nowhere Africa with a little boy whispering a phrase I didn’t understand over and over again in my ear broke my heart. Not knowing what he was saying only knowing that he was so cute I called the translator over asking what this precious little boy was saying. She explained to me how he was asking me to bring him some rice and beans to him tomorrow. As she told me this my heart broke once more realizing that I was looking down at a hungry child. God changed me at that moment and I will forever associate hunger with this little...

A simple smile

This week I had the opportunity to go to a hospital for the terminally ill, called The Hope House. I thought it would be something new and different from my everyday routine of helping at the care points. While in Swaziland, I’ve been asking God to challenge me, and I figured The Hope House would be perfect. For me, talking to children is easy, but talking to people on their death bed is a whole different story. Literally as son as I stepped onto the property, I could feel the peace that filled the air. From the beautiful gardens to the plaques on the walls about prayers, you could...

Fire From Within

Thursday. It was finally here. It was time to go back to visit Trustee and Biggie. A small group of us were going to go to cook, eat, and enjoy their company, but that is not quite how the afternoon played out. When we got to their homes (they are neighbors) they were outside clearing sticks in the yard. As we all joined to help, we learned that they were clearing the sticks because the plan was to burn the yard to prepare for a party. (We have realized that it very normal to burn land in Swazi.) Then Trustee, while we were all standing around, started to light the dry ground on fire. They...

“New York!”

To the Swazis, I am known as “New York” or Mrs. Hunter, as if I’m already married (haha!). At church on Sunday our group introduced ourselves, saying our name and what state we are from. Saying “New York” opened up some very humorous conversations. I was asked if I knew Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Rihanna personally and then was serenaded by my new friends with “Single Ladies” by Beyonce. The people here are so incredibly sweet and gracious. I love not having to worry about what time it is or where we’re going next, because no one knows and...

Tipeala- The Boy Who Won My Heart

Yesterday at the care point I was talking to the GoGo’s (the grandmothers) cooking the kid’s against hunger meal for the children when a mother walked up with her baby girl and her son.  The boy was shy, his eye’s where yellow, his hair not combed and his clothes were torn.  He was about 4 years old.  I started to talk to him and play peek a boo.  My heart began to sink as he reach his two arms slowly towards me as he just wanted to be loved.  I picked him up and held him close. I began to sing over him and tell him I loved him.  I told him...
