A Day In Their Shoes

Today represented a day in their shoes.  I went to do construction and we were done by 10 am then I was able to create ministry.  A lady name Sinphiwe came to fetch water with her 9 month old baby named Phimelele.  I saw her pushing a wheelbarrow down the rocky dirt road with two five gallon containers for water with her baby in the wheelbarrow naked.  I began talking to Sinphiwe about life, how often she had to fletch water, about her son and her homestead.  I found out that she was a single mother and she is 21 years old.  I could not beleive the process that...

The Martha Story

Yesturday I was reminded of a childhood memory from when I was younger.  There was an older women named Martha Barto.  She was a women of God and she had a passion for the children of our Church (Southbrook Christian Church).  She was also known as the gum lady.  I would go up to her and kiss her cheek and she stated “I love you and Jesus loves you”.  At the time I was focused on the piece of gum I received but thinking back I was always reminded of the love Jesus has for me.  Then yesturday I was holding a little girl, my heart broke for her. ...

“Happy too much”

The precious words “I am happy too much” from mumsy at the Hope House in the city of Manzini pretty much sums up my feelings of being here in Swaziland. This past tuesday, some of us went into town for a different type of ministry to visit the Hope House. The minute I stepped foot into this place, there was an overwhelming sense of peace, love, grace, and contentment. People from all walks of life live there as they are recovering or dealing with all different kinds of sicknesses. As we started walking, we came across a precious woman in a wheelchair sitting in the sun just...

no place i’d rather be.

Being back in Swaziland is hard in some ways and easier in other ways. It is hard to be back in Swaziland away from my family, especially when my Uncle Ed just passed away. It is hard to be back in Swaziland and not be in Bulembu, with Auntie Xolile and the precious children of house number ten. It is hard to spend my summer in a familiar yet unfamiliar land where going into town can be extremely stressful for fear of having your things stolen from your person. But it is also easy. It is easy to find things to thank God for when you are so far away from American consumerism. It is easy to...

I am because He is

My favorite scene: I love walking to the care point in the morning. The sun is always shining and there are no clouds in the bright blue sky. After we dodge chickens, roosters, dogs, goats, and cows, we lock the gate of the homestead behind us. As we walk down the dusty and rocky road, we increasingly hear shouts of joy mixed with Siswati phrase. Looking up from the ground, I see 30 Swazi children running full force towards us-shining white smiles, bare feet, arms outstretched-as a dust cloud follows them. Our hearts overflow with joy as we run, tripping in our long skirts, to them. They...
