The Old Has Gone…

Yesterday, one of our ministry partners joked that he was happy to see that we were finally starting to lose our white skin and get the African skin. He was of course referring to the fact that many of us have some serious sunburns that are peeling. Perhaps it has something to do with the lack of sunscreen that we applied on our beach day Monday.       One of us joked that “The old has gone and the new has come.” As I laughed I realized a serious truth in that statement. We have only been here for a month, but we have all changed and grown...

Falling in love

Falling in love is a funny thing…  It reminds me of putting your finger into the straw holder on your to-go cup. It’s ok while it’s happening, but moving on hurts terribly.    This week I fell in love. I fell in love knowing as it was happening that I would have to physically move on quickly.  It wasn’t on purpose, I didn’t mean to stick my finger in the trap. But I did, and let me just tell you, the little bit of pain was worth it all my friends.     I fell in love with a 5 year old that broke his pencil on purpose, so he could...

I will always be in chains

The closer I’ve come to God, the more I have come to understand that I’m not free from chains. In fact, the closer I get to my Savior, the more chained down I am. I have never in my life been free from chains, nor have you. Think of it this way, there are two different types of chains. Those which come from below, and those which come from above. We’re always bound in one. The chains which come from below come from the earth, and are of the flesh. Most of my life I was bound in these chains, which I couldn’t break, but only Christ could (and...

Fifteen Reasons to Wake Up in the Morning

I’m not a morning person, but one month ago today I woke up at about 7AM even though I had no reason to be up that early. I couldn’t possibly sleep any longer because I knew that my adventure was beginning on that day. A few hours later I found myself driving up to Gainesville, Georgia with my mom. It was about an hour-long drive to the Adventures in Missions headquarters, and I spent most of that time wondering what training camp had in store for me. Soon I would meet my teammates, who I would be spending three months with in Africa….gosh, I hope we...

Not My Plan

I thought it would break, but wait… what? It’s only gotten bigger.  I thought God would do one thing, instead he did the opposite.    “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).   And you know, I love it.    Before this trip, one of my prayers was that God would give me such a love for the Swazi people and this experience that my heart...
