The call to being fearless

What’s your biggest fear? Does it have to do with your physical, emotional, maybe even spiritual safety? As true Christians, we are called by God to only fear one thing, and that’s Him. So naturally, the question arises.. What does it mean to fear God? Fearing God is knowing that He is the Alpha Omega, the Beginning and the End. Knowing that He is holy and sovereign, above everyone and everything, holding your very next breath in His hand. Not just knowing that, but applying it to your life. So much that it affects our actions and the way we live, turning us away from a life of...

Under the guava tree

Last week Shad, Joy, Joanna and I, went with Nombali and Sanele to visit definitely the oldest woman I’ve ever met. When we got to her homestead that overlooked the beautiful mountains and with puppies running all around, my excitement was in the fact that I was sure she would be able to tell us all about her life and pour all of her wisdom into us. Unfortunately we found the exact opposite. We were pointed to a tree with a fragile, frail woman laying flat on her stomach on a blanket. After our “Sawabonas” (hello in SiSwati), I was already captivated by her beautiful blue...

15 Americans

You’re going on a mission trip with 15 Americans!? This is often the reaction I got when I told family and friends at home in Canada about the mission trip I was going on.  Sure they make fun of how I pronounce the words “produce” and “women”. They talk about restaurants I’ve never heard of like Zaxbys, Bojangles, and Culvers. They use Farenhiet instead of Celsius and miles instead of kilometers, but I love our team so much! They have accepted me even though I am from another country. One Swazi man asked a group of us, “How many states are...

When I See It Like An Onion

We all walk out of the grocery store with a week’s amount of groceries for sixteen people.  Cross the parking lot with all the bags in hand, and load in the van.  Sounds fairly normal and make sense…  But while in Swaziland, that’s not fairly normal and doesn’t make sense. All eyes in that crowded parking lot are on us.   Kombi bus drivers holler and want to take us in their vehicles to our destination.  Children stare, and men tell us we are beautiful.  Young girls try to sell us icy drinks in plastic bags. In that moment, who am...

Crazy memories, Ordinary people, and an Extraordinary God.

We’ve reached our halfway mark in this journey, and over debrief this past week we were encouraged to celebrate.  We went around the group and shared our favorite moments from the past month and a half. Some were serious, some were funny, but all of them were a celebration of what The Lord has shown us in this beautiful place. It’s important to live in the present, to let go of the nostalgia of past experiences in some ways, but it’s also important to reflect on what you’ve been blessed with, and just remember how gracious our Heavenly Father is with His...
