I’ve never really loved kids.

I know, crazy, right? What missionary ever says they feel anything but adoration for children? But it’s true. I’ve never loved kids. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy them from time to time, but I’ve never had the passion for them that so many around me seem to feel. This all changed at Hope House, where a seven year old stole my heart. Siyabonga is a young man of very few words, but the love he shows towards all of us is phenomenal. His caregiver told me the other day that I was like his mother. Like. His. Mother. In what world am I qualified enough to be a stand in...

Wow. I’m in Africa!

It has been a week since I left the familiarity of the United States to set out with 33 other individuals on this adventure of a lifetime to Swaziland. I have already experienced so much and somehow there is still so much further to go! Each and every day there is something that makes me stop and say “Wow. I’m in Africa!” because the enormity of my current reality still hasn’t fully set in.   I am blessed to be living with 10 beautiful, crazy, insightful and loving women at this adorable homestead, complete with a rooster that never fails to start crowing at...

Jesus Loves the Little Children

Something that has been prominent on my heart this week is Genesis 1:27 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”   In my previous mission trips to Africa, I was never much of a baby-holder. I always connected more with the older, teenage girls and shared life with them.   Almost every day this week, God placed a baby girl in my arms. My ministry team is working with AIM administration, going to all the different care points around Manzini and collecting information for the children’s...

Serving like Jesus.

Wow where do I even begin to describe my time in Swaziland so far. It has been amazing to say the least. So many wonderful things have happened and God has already shown us so much. There have been many things that have touched my heart but the Nkambule Family definitely has touched me the most. This is a family of ten kids and a mother and father. We met this family because a few of my teammates had found them when some of the girls of the Nkambule family were fetching water from the creek. And when I say fetching water I mean taking 5 or 6 huge buckets and filling them to the brim with...

Dirty Feet Aren’t So Bad

Sawubona! (This means hello in Siswati!) Since we have officially been in Africa for 5 whole days now, I thought I would write a blog and update everyone on how my trip is going. We arrived in Swaziland on Monday evening and drove to the building that we will all call home for the next two months. There is a small living area, kitchen, and three very small bedrooms. There are 23 of us living in our home with 2 small port a pottys that smell like elephant poop and one bathroom that we use for cold bucket showers. We wash our clothes and dishes in wash buckets outside and hang the clothes on...

It takes a little faith

For the past couple months, my heart has been bursting with excitement at the thought of spreading Jesus’s love to and playing with the children of Africa. Since we have such a large team and there are various ministry opportunities here in Swazi, we were broken up into different groups of ministry. I was thrilled to be assigned to carepoint ministry, which provides children with both food and an education. Much to my dismay, I was switched from carepoint ministry to administration due to certain logistics. As much as I would like to say that I trusted God and happily accepted this...
