You Know You’re In Africa When…

1.) You have to strategically plan your peeing angle in
order not to pee all over your feet.

2.) your newest obsession is learning about black mambas and
asking everyone you meet the chances of you seeing one.

3.)being proposed to is a daily occurrence, and you wont say
yes unless more than 10 cows are being offered in exchange.

4.) brushing your teeth, showering, going to the bathroom,
basically everything is out in the open and among massive amounts of livestock.

5.) riding a bus sitting next to a live chicken in a plastic
bag is just another bus ride.

6.) being white makes you instantly famous and rich.

7.) never knowing whether your kombi (bus) is going to go 20
miles out out the way or make you walk to avoid the police.

8.) the body odor of others makes you live in constant fear
of your own smell.

9.) your bed time is 7:30…. and 8:30 on the weekends.

10.) going to the doctor is an all day affair

11.) meat and soda make a dinner fancy.

12.) you feel like your living a high life when you sit on a
couch or see a tv

13.) you go days without looking in the mirror..and when you
do you are startled that you look like a homeless hippie.

14.) wearing something above your knees makes you feel
scandalous

15.) massive amount of dirt is located…EVERYWHERE.

16.) showering becomes a weekly or bi-weekly hassle.

17.) catching a goat is a new game to pass time

18.) you can honestly say “i have nothing to do right
now”

19.) people offer you their child in casual conversation

20.) a day cant go by without someone asking you for money,
your shirt, your purse, your shoes, or anything else possible.

21.) you rub your “clean” skin and chunks of dirt
peal off.

22.) waving at a person makes their whole day.

23.) one hour of internet a week is the highlight of the
week and is reminder that your family and friends actually exist.

24.)being waken up by your african neighbor in the middle of
your hut demanding sweets, nail polish, or other meaningless remarks at 5 am
has become normal.

25.) you’ve given up on the possibility of actually being
clean until december 13.

26.) the 13 strangers you came here with have become your
family.

27.) the smile of a child captures your heart completely.

28.) you are convicted by the joy people with nothing have
and are inspired by the genuine love they have for the Lord.

29.) people tell you there name and there are clicks and
sounds that you didn’t know existed.

30.) asking to shoot someone is an honor, and hearing kids
chanting “shoot me” just means take their picture.

31.) you have conversations with people on the road while
your sitting on the toilet.

32.) you call a hut your home.

33.) you actually understand and experienced the saying
“it’s hot as africa”

34.) sleeping in means 6am.

35.) being called fat, ugly, old, pregnant, or other rude
remarks are not held back and are socially acceptable.

36.) nursing mothers are not discrete or covered

37.) going to the bathroom anywhere and everywhere despite your
surroundings is expected.

38.) baby wipes and hand sanitizer are considered a shower

39.) running water and electricity are a unheard of luxury

40.) you literally never know what time it is

41.) your wardrobe consists of the same 3 skirts and 4
shirts.

42.)boiled and bleached water are an essential part of every
meal.

43.) your conversations revolve around three topics: food,
going to the bathroom, and things your doing as soon as you get home.

44.) you have mastered hand techniques kids have taught you
to scoop food since utensils are not frequently used.

45.) despite how dirty you are, your showering habits solely
depend on the weather

46.) you’ve experienced the most incredible joy and
happiness despite not having all the comforts from home

47.)you are hot, sweaty,stinky, and still feel like the most
beautiful daughter of god.

48.) being rich is now defined by the amount of love and
grace you have in Christ

49.) you no longer are ignorant of the injustices of the
world.

50.) you will never be the same person again, because no
matter where you go, africa with always have a part of you heart.
