They Call Me Teacha

They call me teacha and I love them.

Every day I spend five hours with nine five and six year olds who are now forever engrained in my heart and mind. They call me teacha.

Never have I once considered teaching- God bless those with patience to teach. Seriously, thank you. Yet being “teacha” for just one month has blessed me beyond belief.

Just to clarify- I am not the sole teacha. I work at a carepoint (preschool) under a phenomenal woman of God named Treasure- and honestly being in her presence is a treasure itself. Her kind heart, gentle spirit and wild humor inspire me every single day. Teacha Treasure, in her kindness, allows me to take on different tasks- such as going over the morning reciting exercises, telling Bible stories, or working with the students on their English writing.

And in the midst of this thing called teaching, something beautiful happens. I gain a love and compassion for nine children that I did not imagine was possible.

Marobsa- Mr. Ornery. I love when you try to pull sneaky tricks and glance to see if I noticed. I love your playful grin and your tight neck hugs.

Gilda- Ms. Studious. I love the amount of time you put into doing your work correctly and respecting the teacher. I love that the moment we step outside, you are a silly, giggling, ever-happy friend of mine.

Nukophila- Ms. Too smart for her own good. I love that you always finish your work first and remain humble. I can’t get enough of your batting eyelashes and sweet sweet smile as you strut with confidence and play like one of the boys.

Sibusiso- The Little Man. I love that you stand taller than the rest of the class and look like you should be 30. I love that you are a silent leader in the class and you are quick to help others.

Wonderboy: Mr. Smart and sweet. I love first of all that your name is Wonderboy, but also that you are intelligent, humble, playful, loving, and helpful. I love when your mom is cooking so you stay to sit with us all afternoon- whether we play, sit, or cuddle.

Suku- Mr. Broken. I am so sorry that you have been through so much, but I love you so much. I love that you stand up for yourself and I love that you come to sit on my lap the second you are dismissed for a break.

Phetsile- Ms. One of a Kind. I love that you celebrate the little things- like writing an “a” when you know you’re by far the slowest learner. I love how confident and FUNNY you are. I even love you when you misbehave if Treasure steps out.

Sananelo: Ms. Reserved. I love how well you focus in class and work to do your best. I love watching you interact with your friends outside even though you refuse to warm up to me. 🙂

Kuhle: Mr. Enthusiasm. I love your toothless smile that you are always flashing! I love your enthusiasm for everything- work and play.

Side note: I don’t have favorites, but don’t be surprised if I bring Phetsile home with me. 🙂
