Shoot for the moon and land among the stars

One of my favorite things here in Swazi has been when my teammates and I lay outside our hut to stargaze and sing worship. First off, there is nothing like the African night sky. Never in my life have I seen so many stars and such a high resolution of stars at that. Might I add you can see the MILKY WAY here. At least we think it’s the Milky Way… The only words I can think to describe it are WOW and majestic. What an awesome experience to gaze at God’s breathtaking artwork while worshiping Him.

One night in the middle of our stargazing worship, suddenly it dawned on me: a clear night sky is a symbol of life here on Earth. The world (a night sky) is full of sin (darkness). However, it is also full of those shining with the Holy Spirit (stars) and Jesus (the moon). Every morning the dark night sky does a 180 and turns completely light. Likewise, one day complete light will come and replace all the darkness on earth. Joy comes in the morning.

How cool is it that 1. God gives us a daily reminder with each sunrise that even though the earth is covered in darkness now, one day when morning comes, light will replace all the darkness 2. Even amidst so much darkness, through Jesus you can find [and be] light.

As the cheesy poster hanging up in my high school math class said, shoot for the moon because even if you miss you’ll land among the stars. Or as I like to see it, shoot to be like Jesus because even when we fall short, we can shine with the Holy Spirit living inside of us. We’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.

“Walk by the light you have so darkness doesn’t destroy you. If you walk in darkness you don’t know where you’re going. As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you and shining through your lives.” John 12:35-36
