The first couple days are officially CHECKED OFF on my journey this summer in Swaziland, Africa. I have one word to describe this place… Breathtaking. Even the squatties, (the toilets… well more like holes in the groud) because they… well take your breath away! 🙂
Anyways, yesterday was the first full day in Timbutini, a little village that is now me and my beautiful team of 21 other girls home for the next two months. The morning started with an orientation at the local church/care point. As the orientation was going on children started showing up at the care point, peeking through the door and laughing at all the strange “white people” from America. After we finished the girls and I were able to walk outside and we were immediately approached by the children eagerly to loved. It wasn’t even 5 minutes later until I looked around my group and everyone was laughing, playing, holding, or all three with the children. English is one of the official languages here, but not many know it. In fact most of the children and older generations speak saswati. I learned that day that even if I could not speak their language or they mine, laughter and joy is the ultimate breaker of communication barriers. The joy here is unbelievable and it humbles me to realize that these people and children literally have nothing and they find more joy and laughter then I do on a normal day at home in the states. These children have taught me so much already and I’ve only been here for two days. I’m excited to see what God will teach me as the two months continue. I’d write more about my journey, but my clock countdown at the internet cafe is relentless and is going to boot me off any minute.
Love from Swazi,
Molly
