One Night… Homeless

Upon arrival at the airport I was nervous about meeting the team I would be living in community with for the next three month. Little did I know that would be the first f many challenges i would be overcoming this week. The first night for example, I had to let go of my pre-conceived idea that I would be sleep in a warm bed for a solids nights rest, I soon found out that was not going to to be the case. Instead, we were split up in groups of about ten and sent out to the streets of downtown Atlanta to brave the cold and become homeless. Our team met many of the men who sleep in the cold wind and, ruthless weather, and freezing rain nightly. We prayed over everyone who would let us and told about Christ and what he had done for us so we can live with him for eternity. It was shocking to me to hear the stories of these men, to find out they were men of God and worshipped him with a joyful heart despite that they were living on the streets, unsure of where their next meal was coming from.

Looking into the windows of shops and restaurant only reinforced how cold the biting wind was on our faces. After seeing the people eating in a comfortable diner that night, it is easier to understand a likely perspective and attitude of the people of Swaziland when they see a group of westerners with three means a day and multiple changes of clothes. It is a perspective I never knew how to gain, or even thought about gaining before that night on the streets. I am looking forward to what God will be teaching me in the months to come. Thank you for your prayers!
